July 7, 2022 (Boone, IA) – Governor Kim Reynolds has recently announced eight recipients of the Iowa Health Careers Registered Apprenticeship Grant Program. The Boone Community School District has been awarded over $410,000 to further expand their existing apprenticeship program.
The Health Careers Registered Apprenticeship Program is a new grant opportunity built on an innovative learning model that introduces health care opportunities to high school students. The grant awards Iowa communities to help launch or expand innovative health care registered apprenticeship programs across the state, which will recruit students to become a certified nursing assistant and qualify for a number of health care careers while getting paid, all before leaving high school.
“The Health Careers Grant serves as an opportunity for us to expand the already robust work-based learning opportunities we offer students at Boone Community Schools,” said Julie Trepa, Superintendent of the Boone Community School District. “We value our strong, collaborative relationships with local businesses and are thrilled that receiving a grant such as this benefits both our students and our community at large!”
Current Boone High School and DMACC coursework will be expanded to offer local training options, which will increase the number of students able to access healthcare courses and certifications within Boone and Story County to 60 students over three years.
The grant will also go towards establishing two additional High School Registered Apprenticeship pathways to support healthcare needs and student interests. Registered apprenticeships will be established in Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Medical Technician.
